Sponser an AFSer blog
Hi, my name is Mary Marren and I live in Burlington, WI. I am currently a junior at Burlington High School. Some things that I enjoy doing are painting, dancing, singing, and playing the piano. The reason I would like to go abroad with AFS is to get a cultural experience. Where I live there is not much diversity, so by studying abroad I am hoping to gain an understanding of other people's life and culture. I am planning to spend a semester studing in France, where I plan to further my language speaking skills, and study hard to become fluent in French. I chose to ask AFSers for sponsorship because with two sisters, and a brother in college, money is on a tight budget. I have already sent out sponsorship letters, applied for scholarships, and work two jobs, but even with all the help I have recieved, I find I'm still coming up short. In total I have raised $2,500, out of the $8,900 needed. I am going to continue to fund raise throughout summer, and work practically ever day. Through this blog I would like to raise $5,000. To sponsor my AFS program now, please click the ChipIn button.
Thanks!

Dear Blog,
I am currently hoping to study abroad next year, for the first semester of 2009. I hope to go to France, but any country will be exciting and teach me a lot of different things. The only thing that i'm really afraid of is not knowing anybody. Hopefully I will make friends and someone will be there to show me the ropes. To study abroad there are plenty of things I have needed to overcome to get where I am today. One of those challenges was how I was going to afford it. I applied for scholarships, and have been working very hard to earn money through my job and fundraisers. Another challenge that I overcame was wondering if I would miss my friends and family too much. In the end, I decided that this was a once in a life time opportunity that I couldn't pass up. Why I chose to study abroad in high school is because I think that highschoolers are still learning about life, and I think that the information I learn while abroad will help me later in life. My family and friends support my decision to go, and are thrilled that I am determined to pursue my dreams.
